The tomato is a fruit that belongs to the nightshade family (Solanaceae), and it is widely cultivated due to its edible, fleshy, and usually red fruit. Although it originated from South America, the tomato is now grown across the world, including in Nigeria. While it is commonly used as a vegetable in cooking—particularly in dishes such as stews, jollof rice, and sauces—it is, in botanical terms, classified as a fruit, specifically a type of berry.
Tomatoes provide numerous health benefits because they are rich in essential nutrients such as vitamins A, C, and K, along with powerful antioxidants like lycopene and beta-carotene. These nutrients help to support heart health, reduce the risk of certain cancers, and improve skin appearance and immune system function. In addition, tomatoes help with hydration and can assist in muscle recovery after physical activity.
